Experience Summary

In this 360-degree video, observe the procedure of setting up a dressing pack, washing a wound and applying a simple dressing, all whilst using the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT).

ANTT

ANTT is a critical component of effective wound care management, designed to prevent the introduction of harmful microorganisms into wounds during clinical procedures. Maintaining ANTT is essential for minimising the risk of infection, promoting optimal healing conditions, and ensuring patient safety. ANTT involves using a methodical approach to wound care that avoids direct contact with key parts of equipment (such as dressings or instruments) and key sites (such as open wounds or insertion points), unless contact is made with sterile gloves or sterile equipment.

ANTT can be divided into two types: standard and surgical. Standard ANTT is typically used in procedures involving intact or less invasive wounds, whereas surgical ANTT is used for more complex procedures that involve higher infection risks. Regardless of the setting, the fundamental principles remain the same—protect the patient from contamination by maintaining asepsis and minimising unnecessary exposure to pathogens.

PPE

Correct use of PPE is another vital aspect of maintaining ANTT during wound care. PPE includes gloves, aprons, masks, and sometimes eye protection, and serves as a barrier between the clinician and the patient. The proper use of PPE reduces the risk of cross-contamination between patients, as well as from the healthcare provider to the patient. For example, using sterile gloves when handling dressings or touching the wound site ensures that no bacteria from the clinician’s hands is transferred, even if hand hygiene has been performed.

Moreover, PPE protects healthcare professionals from exposure to bodily fluids, reducing the risk of contracting or transmitting infections. Inappropriate use of PPE—such as touching non-sterile surfaces and then returning to a sterile field—can compromise ANTT and increase the likelihood of infection. Thus, adhering strictly to PPE protocols supports the integrity of aseptic technique and enhances patient outcomes.

Maintaining ANTT and using PPE correctly during wound care is not only a matter of professional competence, but also a legal and ethical responsibility. Failure to follow aseptic procedures can lead to wound infections, prolonged hospital stays, additional treatments, and in severe cases, life-threatening complications such as sepsis. Therefore, all healthcare professionals must be trained and vigilant in upholding these standards to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the importance of using PPE and ANTT in safe and effective patient care.
  2. Understand the steps in maintaining ANTT when cleaning and resting a wound.
  3. Observe effective communication skills used in the video whilst performing a procedure.
